Identify Theft of Credit Card

In 2019, over 16 million U.S. consumers were victims of identity fraud and other forms of credit card theft – and the problem continues to grow.

One of the most common forms of identity theft is credit card fraud—unauthorized charges made to a person’s account. It is usually impossible for someone who’s been a victim to detect these charges until after they’ve already occurred, which makes it even more important to know what to do once it happens.

To protect yourself from credit card fraud, it’s important to be aware of the signs that could indicate your information has been stolen. Look out for any suspicious activity on your account, such as charges you don’t recognize or sudden changes in your account balance. You should also monitor your credit reports regularly for any unauthorized accounts opened in your name.

It’s also important to take steps to protect your personal information. Make sure to use strong passwords and never share your account numbers or other sensitive information with anyone. Additionally, be sure to shred any documents that contain your financial information before throwing them away.

Finally, if you think you may have been a victim of credit card fraud, contact your bank or credit card company immediately.  TILA, FCRA, and other governing laws have certain timeframes in which disputes must be made.  As always, our office is always open to assisting with the disputes or answering any questions.
